Guntersville, Alabama is an action-packed small town, with so much to do. Set along Lake Guntersville, obvious activities involve the water, from boating to championship bass fishing. Rent a kayak at Town Creek Fishing Center and row to Hambrick Bat Cave at sunset to watch thousands of endangered bats emerge at once (Lake and River Fun also offers boat tours to see this nightly event). Take the kids to Sand Mountain Park, where you’ll find a pool, lazy river, and several water slides. Watch the only boat racing event of its kind in the south at Guntersville Lake Hydrofest every June, where you’ll see boats flying across the water at speeds of 200mph. If you want to slow things down, simply hang a hammock lake-side and relax your cares away.
For an adventure, head to Screaming Eagle Zipline to soar through the air or traverse a series of suspension bridges. Check out the many ATV and mountain biking trails in the area, or pull on your hiking boots and walk a trail. Explore old caves below the earth at Cathedral Caverns State Park for a different kind of thrill.
If shopping’s more your speed, you’ll be more than satisfied with a number of antique shops and boutiques. The Flower Exchange is a special shop, where you can buy gorgeous blooms or outdoor art. After a day of shopping, have a seat at Whole Backstage Theatre, with a variety of live theatre and performing arts shows to see. Or soak in local history at Guntersville Museum and Cultural Center and experience life in the early 1900s at Arab Historic Village.
When hunger strikes, you will find many dining options. Soak in fresh air under twinkling string lights at Rock House Eatery, combine seafood with lake views at Wintzells Oyster House, or share a pizza at Tomato Tomato Wood Fired Pizza then grab a glass of vino at Jules J. Berta Vineyards. For local flavors, try local catfish at Top O’ the River, crawfish and alligator at Crawmamas, or southern barbecue at Hog Leg Barbecue.

-Eagle Awareness Weekends at Lake Guntersville State Park in January and February
